Beginning

In 1997 the VCB and TREC contracted with The Waterfront Center to come in and assess the community and suggest ways to inspire/engage our citizens and to give us examples of what other communities had done successfully.

The result of that visit was the Tri-Cities Rivershore Plan. And a suggestion to focus on 1998 as The Year of the River…to engage our citizens and empower them to have ownership of the Columbia River…so that they would support public investment in waterfront infrastructure.

During that year, the entire community was encouraged to embrace the theme “year of the river” . A logo was developed…and the Tri-City Herald included this logo on their masthead for the entire year. More than 300 events took place as part of the 1998 activities.
